A tiny shrine that sits on your palm, with omikuji (the paper fortunes drawn at Japanese shrines). Press "Offer a Coin" in the menu: a coin drops into the offering box, the bell rings, and a karakuri tea-serving doll walks out of the shrine door carrying a tray.
When the doll bows at the front edge of the base, the rolled paper on the tray rolls forward, hangs over the edge and unrolls so you can read your fortune (a scene of about 4.5 seconds). Press again and it rolls up the paper, goes back home, and brings a new slip.
The result is drawn on the presser's device and synced, so everyone around you sees the same slip. For New Year shrine-visit gatherings and New Year photos.
Features
- A karakuri scene: coin offering, bell, the doll walks out, bows, and the paper unrolls so you can read the slip
- You can see why it moves: under the edge on the side of the base, gears, a winding drum and a fan governor turn only while the doll walks (the governor is why it walks slowly)
- Same slip for everyone: the random number is drawn on the presser's device and synced. The slip opens about 3.5 seconds after the press, so even with some network delay the same slip opens
- The paper really hangs down: even if you tilt it in your hand or the doll bows, the paper always hangs straight down (vertex shader)
- Only Great Blessing has a glowing gold seal: a band of gold light runs across the seal and it brightens (visible in dark worlds too)
- 7 slips: Great Blessing, Middle Blessing, Small Blessing, Blessing, Future Blessing, Curse, and Good Fortune (the shop's own slip). The lines are our own writing, set in a world of gears and springs, and even the Curse is phrased to make you smile
- English-menu version: the fortune slips are in English (GREAT BLESSING, CURSE and so on, with English lines for Wishes, Visitor, Lost item, Travel, Study and Business)
- All sounds are our own synthesis: coin, bell, rattling gears, paper, wood knocks. "Ring Bell" rings only the bell
- Details: a curved nagare-style roof with ribs and green patina, rafters and roof boards under the eaves, a gear-crest ridge ornament and gable pendant, lattice double doors, a veranda with railings and post caps, a black lacquer name plaque, an offering box with bars, corner fittings and a coin tray, a wave pattern carved on the front of the base, and brass straps holding the gears
- The doll: a white face with fine painted eyes in the style of Japanese palace dolls, a shaved head with a tuft of hair and a small topknot, a kimono with a small gear pattern, a black sash and striped hakama, white under-sleeves, and white hands holding the edge of the tray (face, costume and shrine are all original)
- Attach To: switch between right hand and left hand in the menu (the base rests on your palm)
- 2 colors: plain wood with a copper roof (indigo kimono) / black lacquer with gold (crimson kimono). The gears are brass on both
- No external shaders needed (custom shaders included; no lilToon needed)
- Modular Avatar ready: put it under your avatar and fit it to your right hand

- Great Blessing (glowing gold seal): 2/16 (12.5%)
- Middle Blessing: 3/16 (18.75%)
- Small Blessing: 3/16 (18.75%)
- Blessing: 3/16 (18.75%)
- Future Blessing: 2/16 (12.5%)

- Good Fortune (the Karakuri Komono slip with a red gear seal): 2/16 (12.5%)
How it syncs, and what late arrivals see
- The presser: each press plays the scene and opens the slip drawn
- People around: they use the synced number, so the same slip opens (it opens about 3.5 seconds later, so network delay is covered)
- Late arrivals (odd number of presses): the doll is out and the current slip is open
- Late arrivals (even number of presses): the doll is waiting at home (press again and everyone sees the scene together)
Menu (English menu prefab)
- Omikuji Fortune > Show: on/off
- Omikuji Fortune > Offer a Coin: one scene per press (first the doll comes out; if it is out, it rolls up the paper, goes back and brings a new slip)
- Omikuji Fortune > Ring Bell: rings only the bell
- Omikuji Fortune > Sound: scene and bell sounds on/off (ON at first)
- Omikuji Fortune > Attach To: Right Hand / Left Hand
What's included
- Prefabs x 2 colors (shrine and base, doll, fortune paper, coin, bell, 4 gears)
- FBX, textures (color swatches, and text images for the slips, plaque and face), materials, 2 custom shaders, animations, 3 sounds (our own synthesis)
- English-menu prefabs (_EN) next to the Japanese-menu prefabs, with English fortune slips. Use one or the other on an avatar, not both.
- Instruction manual and Terms of Use in English and Japanese
Specs
- Added to your avatar (counted in Unity): 9,406 triangles, 12 meshes, 12 material slots (2 kinds of material), 0 PhysBones, 1 Audio Source
- Synced parameters: 27 bits (Show 1, drawn slip 8 + 1, Attach To 8, bell 8, Sound 1)
- All counts follow VRChat's rules (hidden parts are counted too) and show how much one prefab adds to your avatar.
- The VRChat performance rank depends on the total with your avatar, so this item alone does not decide it.
- Particle Systems: 0 / PhysBones: 0 / animated bones: 0 / AudioSources: 1
- No extra skinned mesh
Requirements
- Unity 2022.3.22f1 (an avatar project made with VRChat Creator Companion)
- VRChat SDK (Avatars) 3.10 or later
- Modular Avatar 1.18 or later
- lilToon is not needed (custom shaders included)
Please note
- PC only. Not supported on Quest / Android.
- The random slip is drawn on the presser's device. With a slow connection the doll may come out a moment late for a viewer (the slip opens about 3.5 seconds after the press, so it is usually the same slip).
- Wait until the doll stops (about 4.5 seconds after pressing) before pressing again. Pressing in the middle makes the doll jump a little and starts the next scene.
- It cannot be set down (fixed in the world). Hold it in your hand.
- It has no real fortune-telling or lucky-charm power. Please use it as a toy.
- No hand pose is included.
- If a viewer's Safety settings turn off shaders, the shrine is shown in plain colors and the paper is hidden.
- It does not move in the Unity editor (it moves in VRChat when you use the menu).
- The red seals and the name plaque on the shrine stay in Japanese in the English-menu version (decoration).
- The doll and the fortune slips moving with the menu (Offer a Coin, Ring Bell, Sound, Attach To and others): they move only inside VRChat (including Build & Test) or with Gesture Manager. If they look still in the Unity Editor, nothing is broken.

How this was made (AI-Assisted)
The 3D shapes, materials, shaders and texts of this item were made with scripts written with AI assistance. The sounds were also generated by these scripts (no recorded or third-party sounds). A person checked how it looks and moves in Unity before release.
