VRChat Camera Detection System
Track when players activate or deactivate their VRChat handheld photo camera with this configurable, network-synced UdonSharp system.
The Camera Detection System maintains a live list of players currently using their photo camera and records camera activity in a synchronized log. It is useful for event management, photography areas, moderation tools, camera-restricted spaces, security-style systems, and any world mechanic that needs to react when a player opens or closes their camera.
Core Features
✅ Detects the VRChat handheld photo camera opening and closing
✅ Displays a synchronized list of players with active cameras

✅ Logs how long each camera remained active
✅ Supports both world-space TextMeshPro and canvas UI output
✅ Automatically removes disconnected players from the active list
✅ Includes customizable empty-list and empty-log messages
✅ Configurable camera-check interval
✅ Supports up to 40 active-camera and activity-log UI rows by default
✅ Adjustable maximum synchronized log length
✅ Built with UdonSharp for VRChat worlds
Live Active-Camera List
When a player activates their photo camera, their display name is added to the synchronized active-camera list.
When they close it, their name is removed automatically. Other players in the instance receive the updated list through manual network synchronization.
The system can display this information through:
- A world-space TextMeshPro field
- Individual UI rows inside a Scroll View
- A customizable list heading
- A configurable empty-state message
Camera Activity Log
The system records camera activity such as:
Player activates camera at 10:42pm.
Player deactivates camera at 10:45pm. Camera active for 3m 00s.
The log can be displayed through world-space text, standard Unity UI, or individually generated log rows.
Older entries are automatically trimmed when the configurable character limit is reached, helping keep the synchronized data controlled.
Camera Open and Close Events
The system can send custom Udon events whenever the local player opens or closes their camera.
Use these events to connect the detector to your own world mechanics, such as:
- Showing or hiding warning messages
- Activating camera indicators
- Opening photography areas
- Triggering announcements
- Updating moderation panels
- Enabling visual or audio effects
- Starting custom camera-related interactions
The event names and receiving UdonSharp behaviours are configurable directly from the Inspector.
Object Activation Support
You can assign separate groups of objects that become active depending on the local camera state.
While the camera is open:
- Enable indicators
- Display camera overlays
- Activate signs or effects
- Show recording-style UI
While the camera is closed:
- Restore normal UI
- Hide camera indicators
- Enable alternate objects or messages
Great For
- Event and convention worlds
- Photography areas
- Moderation and staff tools
- Camera-restricted rooms
- Security-themed systems
- Performance and stage worlds
- Clubs and social events
- Interactive camera mechanics
The system detects whether a player has the standard VRChat photo camera active. It does not access, view, or save the photographs being taken.
The package includes the UdonSharp camera detector, synchronized active-player tracking, activity logging, configurable UI support, and camera open/close event controls needed to add camera-aware functionality to your VRChat world.
